چکیده

We report on a comparative Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) multi-scale roughness analysis of cold rolled Al alloy and steel roll, in order to characterize the roughness transfer from the steel roll to the workpiece in cold strip rolling processes. More than three orders of length-scale magnitudes were investigated from 100 microns to 50 nanometers on both types of surfaces. The analysis reveals that both types of surfaces are anisotropic self-affine surfaces. Transverse and longitudinal height profiles exhibit a different roughness exponent (Hurst exponent) z>=0.93±0.03 and zi=0.5±0.05 Different length-scale cut-offs are obtained in each direction l > =50mm, l i $100mm. Height and slope distributions are also computed to complement this study. The above mentionned self-affine characteresitics are found to be very similar for the roll and the strip surfaces, which suggest that roughness transfer takes place from the macroscopic (100 μm) to the very small scale (50 nm).

Using Experimental Procedure to Improve the Efficiency of the Two Stand Reversing Cold Mill

Production of thin steel strips with 0.18-0.26 mm thickness is about 0.75 of annual production of the two stand reversing cold mill, while its efficiency is 60%. This is due to the fact that after montaging the grinded work rolls, rolling thin steel strips (with thicknesses less than 0.18 millimeters) is unavailable. Initially, unsuitable surface roughness, the friction between rolls and the st...

Development of a Predictive Finite Element Model For Investigation of Phases Behavior After Cold Rolling Process

One of the surface defects that arise in sheet metal working is when the part removes from the die. Since there are no external forces to make this defect, the origin of such fail is known as residual stress. Residual stress can develop in sheet metal forming due to non uniform deformation. In this paper, the workpiece is carbon steel with different volume fractions and arrangement of ferrite ...

Surface finish and friction in cold metal rolling

The cold metal rolling industry needs reliable and accurate models to improve predictions of surface finish and friction and thus increase productivity and improve quality. These models are used in setup programs for schedule optimisation, for on-line control algorithms and to help determine process improvements. In most cold rolling operations, lubricant is used to reduce frictional forces, to...

Analytical Modified Model of Cold Rolling Process and Investigation of the Effect of Work Roll Flattening on the Rolling Force

Cold rolling of steel is one of the most important metal forming processes so an accurate control of its parameters during the process is necessary. In this paper, the friction coefficient has been proposed as a function of cold rolling parameters such as forward slip, forward and backward tensile stresses ,strip thickness, static deformation, resistance of strip before and after rolling ,strip...
